Program Outcomes

IMPLEMENT A FRONT-END USER INTERFACE

Coming into the program, I had a basic understanding of websites and design principles, but very limited experience building functional front-end interfaces. I understand what makes a website look good from a user perspective, but I didn’t have the technical knowledge to translate business needs into responsive, accessible, and interactive web experiences.

By completing the program, I gained the skills needed to implement front-end user interfaces that balance design, functionality, and user experience. I learned how to gather business requirements, analyze user needs, and turn those requirements into responsive website designs that function well across devices. I also developed skills in creating, optimizing, and implementing graphics while ensuring websites meet accessibility standards. In addition, I learned how to display dynamic user and API data to create more interactive and useful web experiences.

I demonstrated this outcome through multiple internship projects, including my work on the website redesign for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County and the website build for Farmer Dan. For both projects, I gathered business requirements directly from stakeholders to understand their goals, audience, and functional needs. I used that information to design responsive page layouts and user interfaces tailored to each organization’s brand and users. I created and optimized graphics and visual assets for web use, ensured accessibility and mobile responsiveness were considered throughout the design process, and developed front-end solutions that aligned with user expectations and project specifications. These projects allowed me to apply both technical and creative front-end development skills in real-world scenarios.

Overall, this program has transformed my understanding of front-end development from simply knowing what makes a website visually appealing to understanding how to strategically design and build interfaces that meet business goals, user needs, and technical standards.

IMPLEMENT A BACK-END WEB APPLICATION

Before starting this program, I had a limited understanding of what back-end development really involved. I knew websites needed more than just a good visual design, but I did not fully understand how user requirements, functionality, content management systems, and overall site structure worked together behind the scenes to support the user experience. I had limited experience identifying technical requirements or evaluating solutions based on business needs.

By completing the program, I gained a much stronger understanding of how to plan and support the back-end side of a web application. I learned how to gather user requirements, define problem statements, and identify the technical and functional requirements a web application needs in order to meet business goals. I also developed the ability to analyze possible solutions, validate design decisions against user needs, and work with content management systems to create websites that are practical, manageable, and scalable.

I demonstrated this outcome through my internship projects, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County, and Farmer Dan. In both projects, I worked directly with stakeholders to gather requirements and better understand the site’s purpose, target audience, and required features. I helped identify the main problems the websites needed to solve, such as improving user experience, communicating services more clearly, and creating a site structure that was easy to update and maintain. I also analyzed platform options and considered how each solution would meet the client’s needs. For Farmer Dan, this included evaluating content management system options and choosing a platform that would provide more flexibility for design, storytelling, and future growth. Through these projects, I validated design and functionality decisions against client expectations and applied what I learned to implement and support back-end web application needs in a CMS environment.

Overall, this program helped me better understand that back-end implementation is not just about the technical side of a website, but also about creating a strong foundation that supports the goals of the business and the needs of the user. I now feel more confident in my ability to evaluate requirements, recommend solutions, and help build web applications that are functional, sustainable, and user-focused.

APPLY CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE GUIDELINES

When I began the program, I understood the importance of creating professional-looking websites, but I had a limited understanding of how customer experience extends beyond design. I did not fully recognize how analytics, search engine optimization, branding, and marketing strategies all work together to influence how users interact with a website and how businesses convert visitors into customers.

By completing the program, I gained a much broader understanding of customer experience as a strategic part of web development and digital marketing. I learned how to implement analytics tools to measure website performance and user behavior, apply search engine optimization techniques to improve visibility in search results, maintain a unified brand identity across digital platforms, and use marketing strategies to support engagement and conversion goals. These skills helped me better understand that an effective website must not only function well but also support the overall business strategy.

I demonstrated this outcome through my internship projects with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County and Farmer Dan. For both projects, I considered the customer journey when making design and content decisions to ensure the websites were intuitive, informative, and aligned with the organization’s goals. I incorporated branding elements such as colors, typography, imagery, and messaging to maintain a cohesive brand identity throughout each site. I also applied SEO best practices when planning site structure, page content, and metadata to improve search visibility. Additionally, I researched and planned analytics implementation strategies to measure site performance and user engagement after launch. Through these projects, I was able to connect design, marketing, and user experience principles into a more strategic web development process.

Overall, this program taught me that customer experience is not just about aesthetics – it is about creating a cohesive digital experience that supports user needs while helping businesses achieve measurable goals. I now feel confident in my ability to build websites that combine usability, branding, analytics, and marketing strategy to create stronger online experiences.

INTEGRATE WEB DATA TECHNOLOGIES

When I started this journey, I had no experience working with data in a web development environment. I understood that websites could store and display information dynamically, but I did not know how data models were structured, how databases were queried, or how APIs and back-end data connections supported modern web applications.

By completing the program, I gained a solid understanding of how web data technologies function behind the scenes to support dynamic websites and applications. I learned how to design and interpret data models, write and verify database queries, manipulate data through code, and understand how web APIs structure and deliver data between systems. These skills gave me a much stronger understanding of how front-end and back-end systems connect to create functional, data-driven web experiences.

I demonstrated this outcome through coursework and internship projects where I worked with content management systems and dynamic website functionality to structure and manage content effectively. During my internship projects with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County and Farmer Dan, I applied my understanding of data structures and content organization to plan website architecture, structure dynamic content areas, and work within CMS platforms that rely on underlying data models. I also utilized API-driven tools, integrations, and dynamic content features throughout development, which required understanding how data is structured, retrieved, and displayed across systems. These experiences helped reinforce how proper data organization and management directly impact website functionality, scalability, and user experience.

Overall, this program expanded my understanding of web development beyond design and interface creation by showing me how critical data technologies are to building functional, scalable, and dynamic websites. I now feel more confident in my ability to work with data models, APIs, and data-driven systems as part of modern web development projects.

BUILD WEB-BASED SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS

Coming into the program, I had only a basic understanding of how websites were built and very little experience writing actual code for web applications. I understood the visual side of websites, but I had limited knowledge of client-side and server-side development, testing, debugging, deployment, or the security considerations involved in building functional web-based applications.

By completing the program, I gained hands-on experience developing full web-based applications using both client-side and server-side technologies. I learned how to write code for interactive front-end functionality, support server-side processes, debug and test applications for performance and reliability, and deploy completed web projects to live environments. I also developed proficiency using web developer tools to inspect, troubleshoot, and optimize applications, while learning strategies to improve website security and protect web applications from common vulnerabilities.

I demonstrated this outcome through coursework and internship projects, including the development work completed for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County and Farmer Dan. During these projects, I built responsive, interactive website components using front-end code, configured and customized CMS functionality to support business needs, and tested the sites across devices and browsers to ensure optimal performance. I regularly used browser developer tools to troubleshoot layout, responsiveness, and functionality issues throughout development. I also implemented security and performance best practices by researching secure website configurations, optimizing site performance, and ensuring each project adhered to professional standards before deployment. These experiences allowed me to apply the complete development lifecycle from planning and coding through testing and launch.

Overall, this program gave me the technical skills and confidence to build, test, debug, secure, and deploy web-based software applications in a professional environment. I now understand how to approach web development projects from both a technical and strategic perspective and can contribute meaningfully throughout the entire development process.

DEVELOP PROJECT DOCUMENTS

At the start of the program, I understood that planning was important in web development, but I had no experience creating formal project documentation. I was unfamiliar with how mockups, wireframes, technical specifications, and documentation support an organized and efficient development process before development begins.

By completing the program, I gained the ability to create professional project documentation that supports planning, communication, and execution throughout the development lifecycle. I learned how to build wireframes and mockups to visually communicate layout and functionality, create technical specifications to guide development, and document project requirements in a way that keeps stakeholders and developers aligned. These skills helped me understand the importance of documentation in reducing confusion, improving collaboration, and setting projects up for success before coding begins.

I demonstrated this outcome through my internship projects with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County and Farmer Dan. For both projects, I developed wireframes and mockups to present design concepts and proposed page layouts before moving into development. I also documented business requirements, project goals, and technical specifications to help guide project planning and ensure stakeholder expectations were clearly defined. These planning materials helped create alignment early in the process, reduced potential revisions later, and established a stronger foundation for successful project execution.

Overall, this program taught me that project documentation is a critical part of professional web development, not just an optional planning step. I now understand how to use documentation to improve communication, streamline project workflows, and create a clear roadmap for successful website development. I now feel confident in my ability to produce the planning and documentation materials needed to support efficient collaboration, align stakeholder expectations, and prepare projects for effective implementation.
